Smart Objects Tetrad
Enhances:
· Objects “knowing ” about themselves
· Objects can tell you their location and state
· Items can be traced to anywhere
Retrieves:
· Bar coding information
· ATM/Credit cards
· Metallic detectors/scanners
Reverses:
· Surveillance systems
· Manually stored records
· Existing shopping cards
Obsoletes:
· Tracking systems like GPS and SATNAV
· Less reliance on human investigators
· Items /people being lost
Explanation:
Smart objects have the ability to “tell” where they are and they can feed vital information to any location. We have not seen anything like before and this is certainly something that is new.
With smart objects being able to tell where they are and the state or condition they are in, traditional tracking systems have become obsolete. Libraries for example can track their books to any place on this earth.
Smart objects bring to mind the old military way of wiring someone’s vehicle to track their movements. The problem with that method was that the intelligence built into the devices were very limited in capability and they were restricted to geographic locations.
Smart objects are likely to proliferate into several other aspects of society and business and are likely to be the standard devices in the next few years

ReplyDeleteNow I am unsure whether I should redo my tetrad because I did smartboards. I didn't get any communication until after i had written and posted mine. Nonetheless, I like your explanation, but would love to see it as a visual.
How do you feel about smart objects personally and what are the future implications for these, both good and bad?
Wendi
Lawrence,
ReplyDeleteI think your posting is well done. Smart objects certainly are something “new under the sun.” I agree they will proliferate and become widespread on society and the world. They certainly have a lot of good uses. On the other side I do have fear they will be abused too. Putting issues such as “Big Brother” aside, there are other potential abuses. The other day my insurance carrier sent me a letter to encouraging me to get a flu shot. I can’t help but wonder if this were an honest attempt to keep me healthy because it is the right thing to do, or if it is an attempt to keep me healthy to reduce costs. If the later were true without the protection of privacy laws I could see the insurance company tracking not only what medications I use but also what I buy when I go grocery shopping or what I get to eat at a restaurant. Do you have any personal insights about the privacy issues?
Gary
Wendi:
ReplyDeleteI am not sure of the bad but the fact that objects can tell where they are and in what state they exist, this tells us the Science would be very advanced and so would be the society. For example a pace-maker will be able to tell the doctor that its battery power is low.
Terrorist can find destructive uses for smart object too
Gary:
ReplyDeleteI share your concern. Anything that is not in the right hand can be put to very destructive uses. Sometimes our advanced technology put our own lives at risk.
